Protection system maintenance program development, asset population verification, interval tracking, and RSAW support for Transmission Owners, Generator Owners, and Distribution Providers.

Protective relay panel prepared for technical review
Core scope

Deadline pressure

For applicable maintenance activities and jurisdictions, the twelve-calendar-year maximum maintenance interval for components in service before April 1, 2015 runs to April 1, 2027, where applicable under the entity’s effective compliance date.

Audit-ready evidence

The most useful PRC-005 work is the work that makes the audit evidence obvious before anyone asks for it.

Our process

From project inputs to decision-ready output.

Protection system maintenance program development, asset population verification, interval tracking, and RSAW support for Transmission Owners, Generator Owners, and Distribution Providers.

01

Population reconciliation

One-lines, relay databases, and maintenance records reconciled against the registered protection system scope.

02

Interval mapping

Each component mapped to its maintenance interval and due-date logic.

03

Evidence review

Test records, settings, and maintenance evidence checked for completeness and traceability.

04

Gap closure

Missed intervals, unresolved maintenance issues, and exclusion logic documented and corrected.

05

RSAW support

Narrative support and audit-response package assembled for review.

prc 005 FAQ

Questions before the work begins.

01What does PRC-005 actually cover?

The Protection System comprises protective relays, communications systems necessary for correct operation, voltage and current sensing devices, station DC power supply, and the associated control circuitry.

02What is NOT covered by PRC-005?

Cybersecurity and EMS systems — firmware, SCADA RTUs — fall under the CIP standards, not PRC-005.

03How do I know if my component population is complete?

Auditors cross-check the PRC-005 asset list against one-line diagrams and relay setting databases.

04Time-based or performance-based intervals — which should I use?

Time-based is the default. Performance-based intervals under Attachment A let you extend intervals based on demonstrated fleet performance, but require a defined population segment, a minimum sample size, and ongoing statistical analysis.

05We think we’ve missed an interval. What now?

Self-report. A self-reported violation with a corrective action plan is treated very differently from one an auditor finds.

06Does PRC-005 apply to a new solar or storage project?

Yes, if you register as a Generator Owner and your protection system can trip a BES element.
